I made a lot of technical errors with this painting (chief among them: trying to paint with acrylic on top of metallic spray paint) but I enjoyed experimenting with unusual techniques, and I had fun filling the composition with obscure symbolism from my studies of medieval literature. The main image comes from Revelation 19, where Jesus is described as a warrior on a white horse. Behind him, I arranged the planets in the old geocentric model so that Jesus’ head lines up with Jupiter (the king) while his crown of thorns passes through Mars (god of war and suffering) and his halo of light passes through the Sun. I don’t think anybody’s noticed those symbols, but I love knowing they’re there.
